Women Leinster Final Preview

Clondalkin Ladies Leinster Final

Clondalkin v Edenderry Barnhall 12:30 Saturday 2nd April

Clondalkin Ladies Captain Sandra Flood has called on her charges to make history in Barnhall this coming Saturday.

The Clonettes have the chance to claim the club’s first ever ladies silverware as they challenge Edenderry in the home of near by rivals Barnhall this coming weekend, and Flood believes there is no better motivation to secure the result.

The ladies have been in fine form of late and despite carrying a number of injuries closed out what is only their second ever league campaign with a fine run of performances.

Captain and leader, Flood has now challenged the team to bring that league form into the cup decider this weekend and claim the clubs fourth trophy in two season.

“This is a great chance for us, in what is only our second season, to lift silverware for the first time,” Flood told CRTV.

“Each and every player has the chance to make history. If that is not motivation I don’t know what is. The girls have been amazing all season and we should be confident we can win. If we perform to our best we can defeat anyone and that includes Edenderry this weekend. We are carrying a few injuries but we have a strong squad and that will come into play this weekend.

The game is in Barnhall on Saturday at 1:00 and I am sure the clubs members will be out in force to cheer us on. We have got great support all year but this is a massive game and we would love a massive crowd there.”

Meanwhile Clondalkin’s second string succeeded were the first team failed and cruised to a comfortable 26-12 win away to Longford on Sunday.

First ever second team tries from the impressive Luke Sweetman and fourth team graduate Keith Lubby as well as touch downs from Ken McMahon and big lock Rob Dever saw the Philly Byrne inspired side win their last away league game of the season.

Tighe takes it home

Leinster Womens League Division 3

Clondalkin 5

Barnhall 0

A brilliant individual try from Fiona Tighe brought a victorious and fitting end to what was only the Clonettes second ever season.

A determined Tighe bull dozed her way down the tram lines after a cleverly worked line out to register the only score of the game as Clon beat near by rivals Barnhall by a score line more akin to football than rugby.

Taming the very wild Blue Bull’s in a somewhat ill tempered and rough tie was further proof Clon were worthy of their promotion to the Leinster League and proved perfect preparation for their up coming Leinster Final.

Barnhall made a positive start to the game and tested the home rear guard early on. The home side, however, passed the defensive test with flying colours with big hits coming in from the centre and back row pairings and soon began to bight back.

Once in possession Clon began to threaten and with try scoring sensation Sarah Phelan missing Fiona Tighe took up the points scoring responsibilities.

Tighe, whose brother Colm wore the Clondalkin crest with distinction, charged her way to the line mid way through the opening half to make it 5-0. Theresa Grogan, who kicked from hand beautifully all afternoon, failed to convert, but Clon remained on top for the remainder of the half.

Tempers in what was an entertaining second period became frayed with the Clon side line arguing the Barnhall ladies were doing more dancing in the rucks than a night club dance floor. Such ruck behaviour eventually lead to a visiting sin bin, but despite the lady advantage Clon couldn’t build on the score.

Sandra Healy did cross the white wash after a series of drives from the pack, but her effort was deemed held up.

The Barnhall Babes made a late charge in a bid to snatch a result but the returning Andrea Jebb emulated her fellow back rowers and bothers Karl and David, who played for the thirds and firsts respectfully and put in a superb defensive performance in the latter stages.

Next up for the ladies is a chance to claim silverware for the first time in their short history. Clon play Edenderry on April 2 in the Leinster Cup.
