Sid sets an example

News Article in the Hearld Clondalkin RFC president John 'Sid' Stapleton literally took a hands-on role in Gordon Park last weekend taking to the field as the Fourth team kicked off their league campaign. The playing veteran and second-time president tackled St Mary's players rather than off-field issues in the home defeat.

Inspired by the antics of some of the veterans in last year's inaugural Fourth string's league season, Stapleton, who managed a successful Third string over the past two seasons, dusted off his boots and graced the Gordon Park turf once again.

Fittingly, the president took charge and made a scoring return to action in the narrow loss.

Fourth team captain Anto Byrne said: "It has to be rare for presidents to be playing, but I hope Sid continues to play with us for the season."
