Not Rich Enough: Four Team Friendly It was a sunny day in clondalkin rugby club and the 4th team came out fired up for their season opener. Anto the recent 3rd team player of month, lead the 4ths onto the field under his first captaincy.

Clon kicked off the game with a un-organized defence and which was punished early on by a well work try by the Kilkenny side. Clon found their form and suddenly starting making yards, the Kilkenny line was in a state of shock and gave away two easy penalties in front of the post. John slotted over the two kicks with ease making it 7-6.

Kilkenny had a lucky restart causing a knock on in play, causing a 5 yard scrum. Clons pack was shattered at scrum time and was pushed over to give away an easy try. Clon shot out of the restart showing some form of organization by running their first few phases of play. Clon got camped down in the opposition 22 and soon after Kilkenny gave a way a ridiculous penetly. John stepped up once again and made the score 14-9.

The whistle blew for half time and Conor Steed gave a speech which could only be on par with Tom Duffy’s every blade of grass speech, the clon faithful was fired up and ready to go. On the restart Greg Dunne gave a thumping hit to the Kilkenny 8 at which really set the tone for the rest of the second half.

Soon after the crucial hit clon seemed to be falling apart at the fringes, Conor Steed introduced super subs Richard Doyle, Chris Murray and Conor Mc Auley to the frame. The team was up lifted and suddenly started moving forward playing a game of aerial ping pong. A lazy knock on was giving away by clon again which was punished by the Kilkenny six off the scrum when he caused a fumble and dived on the ball to score.

Clon hopes dropped but were soon to be up lifted by Richard Doyle. Clon won a scrum on the half way, the back line called the move. The scrum was set and the move was executed with ease. John popped the ball to Richard Doyle. Richie broke through the out half and bounced the first centre, and side stepped the full back with ease sending him home clear for his first try. This up lifted clon to a new level.

Kilkenny soon slotted over a penalty making it 24-23.The last few moment saw the pack go to work running at the Kilkenny defence like menace. Kev Dunphy, Chris Murray and Conor Mc Auley broke the line to make serious yard phase after phase. The final moment of the game came quick and clon was planted in the Kilkenny 22.Clon won a scrum and the ball was passed out to john for drop kick, but sadly the drop goal went slightly left and the hearts of the 4th team was broken. The game finished 24-23.

After the game manager Conor Steed mention “today was the first time a lot of lads played rugby, I really wasn’t sure what was going in the first few minutes as the lads were like headless chickens, but we got through it. It taught it was a risky gamble today throwing a lot of new lads into the frame but Richie showed how it paid off in the end when he cross the white wash.
