A magnitude of basic errors saw Clondalkin slip out of promotion pole position last Sunday afternoon, as a plucky Gorey came back to haunt the Gordon Park side for the second season running.

Mid table side Gorey denied Clondalkin a promotion play off place on the last day of last term and they managed to slow the Gordon Park side’s march toward Division 1 with another surprise victory over the weekend.

Clondalkin, who now lie in third place a point behind Ashbourne with a game in hand, have only themselves to blame for the loss, however. The conceded to many soft penalties, fell off to many tackles and spilled balls against the side that had them spilling tears last season.

Gorey started the brighter and kicked their way into a 9-0 lead ensuring Clon paid the ultimate penalty for their rugby indiscretions.

The hosts were really off the pace and but for one moment of back row brilliance from Simon King and Paul Nolan Clon could have been out of the game by half time.

King caught the opposition 8 as he broke from the back of the scrum, drove him back 10 yards and then impressively managed to steal the ball. Scrum half mark Molloy, who was one of the games few decent performers, quickly fed Nolan and he skipped past the opposition full back before touching down under the post.

The brilliant score galvinised the host and they put in an improved effort after the turn round but the couldn’t turn pressure into points.

Carl Horan and Matthew Brocklebank looked dangerous on the wings and Steve Cunningham broke well from full back, but Clon struggled come final pass time. Clondalkin wasted a number of try scoring opportunities and as a result lost a game they targeted a bonus point in.

Scoring tries wasn’t a problem for the Second team, however as they romped home to 40-22 win over the same opposition.

Captain Ali Collier registered the first try after superb forward carried from Brian Coffey and David Jebb.

A brilliant second team debut try from Ben Watson and a James ’Sherk’ Kenny effort then saw Clon push clear in the second half before Chris Kelly raced home to register the bonus point score.

The win see’s Clon maintain there two year unbeaten home record and keeps alive their slim title aspirations. Else were in Corcagh Park the fourth team registered their first win of 2011 with a tight and tense 13- 10 win over Bective. Inspired by under-19 stars Gareth Black and try scorer Bobby Smith and veteran John Walsh the host claimed a much needed win.
