Clondalkin U 11 (6) vs Old Belvedere U 11 (7)
Clondalkin U11s went down by a score of 7-6 to Old Belvedere in their Sunday morning match in Gordon Park..
The team got off to a poor start leaking two early tries which coach Barney Bracken could only attribute to a number of the lads having had a late night on Saturday celebrating the Irish rugby teams Six Nations Grand Slam and Clondalkin native Bernard Dunne’s world title victory.
Great defensive work from Steven, Evan and Keith led to a turnover of possession that saw Darren go the length of the pitch to take Clondalkins first try of the game. Following this, big carries from 2nd row Craig set up a platform from which scrum half Nathan Hayes was able to work off distributing the ball to strike runners Eoin and Ben. Jonathans throwing in the line out was excellent and may have some of the senior coaches asking him to show the first team hookers how to throw a ball. The two teams traded scores eventually going into half time with four tries a piece.
Clondalkins lack of match practice and training in recent weeks showed in the second half with a tiring team eventually loosing out by a score of 7 tries to 6. The score may well have been 6 a piece only for the fact that the Clondalkin referee missed a Belvedere mans foot going into touch prior to him going over for the decisive match winning try.
Coaches Derek Murtagh and Barney Bracken were delighted with the lads performances and Barney had this to say in his interview to Clondalkinrugby.com “The lads have not played or trained together for the past 3 weeks due to weather conditions and matches being cancelled but they showed a lot of spirit out their today and were unlucky not to come away with a better result. Credit must go to the opposition who were a well drilled unit and who provided a stern test for our boys. We play Dungannon next weekend and will be hoping to improve on this weeks performance”.
