Clondalkins underage jet setters were flying high and walking on air at the same time in Baldonnell Army Barracks recently. The kids, who are proud owners of world record for the most rugby tackles made in an hour, were special guests of the Air Corp in Baldonnell and were treated to a special tour of the base. The budding rugby stars may not have got to fly in one of the many planes and helicopters on display but instead secured air time of a more exciting kind.

Not content with the national headlines after their marvellous record attempt the underage stars will increase further their impressive media profile by being shown on TV. The 44 strong group, who were between the ages of 6-12, had their exciting day out filmed by the RTE cameras. There exploits will be aired on The Den’s Yazoo later this month.

It wasn’t the potential of TV fame; however that excited the Clon rugby juniors the most. The talk after the tour was of guns, helicopters, the AirCorp museum and fire trucks.

“It was amazing, I got to hold a machine gun and a revolver,” said Christopher Owens (8).

“I got to sit inside where the pilot sits and see all the controls” Kyle Butler (9)

“It was massive, really big, it was filled with all the latest fire fighting equipment” Daniel Fagan (11) said of the fire engine.

“They looked like they were super fast, they were amazing” Sean Gahan (5) commented on his favourite part of the tour the fixed wing aircraft.

“Whilst the day was about fun and seeing new things it was also about the players learning about the Air Corps and how it is based on teamwork, commitment, training to do your job to the best of your ability all things that a good rugby player also needs” said Peter Byrne CRFC Coach.

“The day was made possible because of Dan Fitzpatrick a member of the Air Corp and Captain of the first team in Clondalkin. The club are very appreciative of the work put into making the day such a success and extend their thanks to Dan, Zulu and the Air Corps.”

The gear was purchased with money raised in last years 5,000 tackles and hopefully this years fundraiser will be just as successful. Mini / Youth Rugby is growing in the club and new players are always welcome. "The purchase of this gear is much appreciated and a vote of confidence from the club in our younger teams" said Peter Byrne Head of Mini Rugby.
