Rachel Vickers takes on Connaught
Clondalkin Rugby Club can lay claim to its first ever senior Leinster star from this Sunday on, as Rachel Vickers makes both her and Clon’s senior Blues debut.
The talented flanker who represented England in the 2006 Women’s Rugby World Cup will get her first provincial cap as Leinster take on Connaught in Donnybrook.
The Gordon Park side has produced underage Leinster stars including current first team players Chris Jebb, Paul McDermot and Niall Nolan. Not to mention John Sexton a former Senior Leinster regular who went on to sport the green of Ireland and even crossed the white wash for his country against the All Blacks.
However, despite being a great source of pride for Clondalkin, Sexton’s Lions caps came during his time with AIL side Trinity.
Hence Rachel becomes the first ever senior player to wear the Blue of Leinster whilst sporting the Clondalkin crest week in week out.
It is another serious break through for Clondalkin who are basking in an amazing season of firsts and are registering history with the same regularity as a professional historian this term.
And despite having only three competitive ladies games the club already have a Leinster representative.
Club President Terry Woodhead was quick to express his and the clubs pride.
“Clondalkin RFC are delighted for Rachel whose talents have been recognised within the Leinster set-up. Rachel, like all the women’s team, has only been with Clondalkin since early in the Summer but her talent shone through from the outset. Rachel’s influence and respect within the team is huge and her encouragement and experience have been extremely beneficial within the team. We wish Rachel well in this, her first Leinster game and look forward to seeing her in both the Leinster and Clondalkin jersey throughout the season and beyond. Clondalkin appreciate the honour Rachel has brought to the club and I hope she can enjoy the whole experience on Sunday”.
Meanwhile the club are on the look out for six ball girls for the tie this Sunday afternoon. If anyone is interested they can contact anyone involved in the ladies set up.
