Articly by Jonny StapletonClondalkin failed to retain the Paul Caffrey Memorial Cup-a trophy very dear to their hearts-after a disappointing display in Westmanstown on Tuesday night. Clondalkin, who use the game to play homage to late club legend Paul Caffrey, produced a below par performance and slipped to their first ever defeat in the competition. The Gaurds collected the trophy for the first time coming back from 6-0 down to eventually win 9-6 in a dogged and at times sloppy affair.Alan Hickey and Andy Tyndall penalties were due reward for a brilliant start for the visitors, but as changes were made the Gordon Park side’s performance subsided and the Guards eventually won with a penalty at the death. Despite being bitterly disappointed captain for the day and fellow Guard Colm Tighe tried to look at the positives. “This game has huge significance to everyone in the club and to be honest I think it’s a game we should never loose for some it’s the most important game in the season. We go out with the intention of doing Caf proud. Today we did that in part,” Tighe explained after the game. “The team that started were all ‘Cafs’ mates. We played underage rugby with him and he was our captain on many occasion. That 15 were immense they put their bodies on the line against superior opposition and went 6-0 to the good,” Caffrey’s close friend added. “To captain a Clondalkin team for this match was a huge honour for me. It should be a honour for anyone to play in this game. We remember Caf all the time in everyday situations, but this gives us a chance to remember him and show what he means to us and the club on the pitch. Its great for the club to come together and remember a great and unique friend, player, man and work college-in the Guards case- doing that is a little better when we win, unfortunately that didn’t happen this time.”Added by admin August 25, 2010 (5:12PM)
