Clondalkin Rugby Club can boast some of the fittest athletes in the Dublin West area after first team flanker Paul Nolan and fitness fanatic Dan Fitzpatrick finished first and third respectfully in the annual City West Survival of the Fittest tournament.
The tournament, which is open to all City West Health and Leisure Centre members, was contested by a number of local sportspersons, some of whom are semi professionals, from various codes including soccer and GAA. However, it was 21 year old former under-18 All Ireland Finalist, Nolan who completed the grueling gladiator gauntlet in the quickest time to be crowned City West’s fittest man.
The result ratifies Captain Fitzpatrick’s one man mission to make the Clon squad one of the fittest in the Leinster League.
The fact Nolan, and Fitzpatrick himself, proved fitter than some athletes of the professional kind as well as sportspersons from codes generally presumed to have more aerobic and athletic qualities than rugby is also testament to both the physical and metaphorical fitness strides Clon have taken this preseason.
“We have really worked hard on fitness this summer and this is further proof of how far we have come. We have seen it on the field this term not just from me and Noely but from all the lads. With the help of City West the payers have really worked hard and dedicated themselves to the cause and we are seeing the benefits now. Noely was always fit but he beat some top athletes has now proved himself the one of the fittest me in Clondalkin and that’s a nice honor to have. I believe we could have one of the fittest teams in the area too, and we have some heavy lads. We don’t just want to be the fittest side in our league though we want to be the best and that’s what we will be focusing on achieving this term,” a somewhat jealous and disappointed Big Dan Fitzpatrick explained.
