Clondalkin 2nds (21) vs Gorey 2nds (0)

.Clondalkin seconds overcame a resilient Gorey by a score of 21-0 in Gordon Park at the weekend. Clon got off to the ideal start with Dave Behan registering their first try after only 5 minutes after some tough running from Simon Comiskey put Clon into an attacking position. Andy Tyndall duly converted and the score was now 7-0.

Clon began applying pressure soon after and some tough defending from Gorey along with a few sneaky punches helped ensured Clon were not going to register a second try too easily. A backs move straight off the training ground appeared to create the space for Carl Horan to go over in the corner only for Lee Beresford to hang onto the ball too long and get put out on his back in the contact.

Clon were awarded a scrum soon after and this time a backs move did work with Paulie Fitzgerald stretching his all time scoring record to a total of 197 tries in a Clondalkin jersey. Another Andy Tyndall conversion and more tough Gorey defense saw the teams go into half time at 14-0.

Clon were determined to push for the bonus with the backs outshining the forwards with their stylish play. Lee Berseford, who was being watched by his new girlfriend, was desperate to register a try but sadly his greed meant that Clon coughed up three more good chances to score. Captain Kevin Cullen felt it was time to do something about this and thundered into a ruck smashing debutant Mike Ryders head into Lee’s nose. Lee was withdrawn from the game and was replaced by the promiscuous Chris ‘Farmboy’ Kelly who himself was being watched by a certain girl on the sideline but luckily for him it was not a certain Ms Burke but rather another one of his many conquests.

Clon had not registered a try in the second half and with 15 minutes to go manager Kenny O’Brien decided it was time to make an impact and unleashed the clubs top scorer on a Saturday Conor Maloney and the ever impressive Kev Hanlon. Within minutes a strong carry from Maloney drove Clon into the Gorey 22. Quick recycled ball to Hanlon set him on his way. Hanlon claims that he stepped two players on his way to the line but it looked more like the players had jumped out of his way. Tyndall converted and it was now 21-0.

With a team boasting Ollie MeGrew, Bren Ward and Maurice Featherstone it was surprising that Clon entered the final five minutes without having seen yellow. However, this soon changed when the unsuspecting Hanlon was punched on the ground by a Gorey player. A mill up followed and Hanlon was binned despite protesting his innocence. The game ended 21-0.

The lack of a bonus point means that the seconds handed the impetus back to Athy in the chase for the league but the team will be happy to have the distraction of the Lalor Cup final to keep them occupied over the Christmas break. Going into 2010, Clon still look to be in with a good shout of taking the league title but only time will tell.
