Total fun at Tackle Day

This article appears in the Evening Herald today.

Clondalkin RFC will hold their 5,000 Tackle Challenge on Sunday October 19. The challenge is simple -- 5,000 tackles to be completed in one day by Clondalkin RFC. What is truly a unique event has captured the support of local businesses who have already came out in support.

Minister of State, John Curran, will be there on the day to present a jersey to the mini-section and also to meet some of the children. Having fun is the corner stone of mini-rugby at Clondalkin RFC and to this end they will give a goodie bag to all participants to make the day as enjoyable as possible. More than 100 children are anticipated to take part on the day and it is hoped the event will help raise much needed funds for underage rugby in Clondalkin and also raise the profile of the club. At the half-time slot of the Wasps-Leinster Heineken Cup game on October 18, the under-12s team will play against Enniscorthy.

The club has organised a supporters' bus to take the mini-section to the RDS to support Leinster and the under-12s. For some, this will be their first time watching a professional rugby game. Clondalkin are fielding teams from Under-six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 and will welcome players of all abilities to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere at Clondalkin RFC. Clondalkin RFC mini-section has grown considerably over the last few years and the fruits of their endeavours are beginning to show -- most recently with Paul Nolan making the Leinster Youth Squad, while Chris Jebb is playing with Irish Youths and Dublin University (AIB League). Whilst the club has only one international, John Sexton, they are hoping there is more in the future.

Next year the club will endeavour to beat a Guinness Book of Records attempt for the most tackles in one hour. This record is currently held by an Australian school, which stands at 4,700.
